Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room: When to Go Where
Updated March 28, 2026 • 8 min read • By National Healthcare Connect
The rule: If it could kill you or cause permanent damage in the next few hours, go to the ER. For everything else that can’t wait for your regular doctor, urgent care is faster, cheaper, and often better.
The average ER visit costs $2,200 and takes 4.5 hours. The average urgent care visit costs $200 and takes 45 minutes. Choosing the right one saves you thousands of dollars and hours of waiting — but going to the wrong one can be dangerous.
Go to the Emergency Room For:
- Chest pain or pressure — possible heart attack
- Difficulty breathing — severe asthma attack, allergic reaction
- Signs of stroke — sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, vision loss
- Severe bleeding that won’t stop
- Head injuries with loss of consciousness
- Broken bones with visible deformity
- Severe abdominal pain (possible appendicitis, internal bleeding)
- Seizures
- Poisoning or drug overdose
- High fever in infants under 3 months
Go to Urgent Care For:
- Minor fractures and sprains (most urgent cares have X-ray)
- Cuts needing stitches (not arterial/severe bleeding)
- Flu, cold, sore throat, ear infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Minor burns
- Rashes and skin infections
- Back pain (without numbness/weakness in legs)
- Eye irritation or minor eye injuries
- Vomiting/diarrhea (without signs of severe dehydration)
- Mild allergic reactions (without difficulty breathing)
